Music company will record and promote stars emerging from The Voice, which launches in the US on NBC in the spring
The Universal Music Group chief executive, Lucian Grainge, today signed a deal with John de Mol giving the music company exclusive rights to the stars created by the Big Brother guru's The X Factor rival, The Voice of...
The Voice of Holland is already a big hit in de Mol's home country and will transfer to US network NBC in the spring, where it will be called The Voice.
The deal with The Voice Talent Agency gives Universal the right to record and promote the new stars emerging from the format worldwide, with the exception of the Netherlands and Belgium.
Universal will also work with de Mol's company Talpa Media Group to maximise the potential of the show and its contestants around the world.
Announcing the deal today, the two companies said the "innovative format" of the show "features only real singing talent". It features a "blind" audition process in which the four celebrity coaches can hear the contestants, but not see them.
De Mol said: "I am convinced that the US version of this format, The Voice, will be a great instrument in discovering genuine and amazing new singing talent in the biggest entertainment market in the world.
"It's fantastic to have broadcaster NBC and Mark Burnett on our side in the US, but Universal Music makes the picture complete."
The final of The Voice of Holland was watched by a peak audience of 3.2 million viewers in November last year, a 54% share of the 20- to 49-year-old market.
Grainge said: "Innovation breeds success, and in television, John de Mol's track record is second to none. He evidently has another winner with The Voice of... format, and we're proud to be partners with Talpa in finding some of tomorrow's most exciting new singers."
