Our critic's pick of the best jazz, world and folk gigs coming up in May and June
Marry Waterson and Oliver Knight
This is a busy time for the Waterson/Carthy clan, with Martin Carthy celebrating his 70th birthday at London's South Bank on 14 May, and his daughter Eliza Carthy back on tour in May and June. Eliza's cousins Marry and Oliver, the children of the late Lal Waterson, are less well-known but also well worth checking out for the quietly unusual and thoughtful songs from their album The Days That Shaped Me. Their tour starts at the Coliseum, Whitby (01947 825 000) on 9 April and ends at the Platform, Glasgow (0141 276 9696) on 21 May, then touring.
Mariza
The singer who has almost single-handedly revived interest in Portuguese fado returns for a tour to promote her new, back-to-the-roots album Fado Tradicional. The album is mysteriously brief, but these will be full-length shows and she is at her charismatic best when heard live. Her tour starts with three dates at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall (0844 875 0073) on 5,6 and 7 May, and ends at Norwich Theatre Royal (01603 63 00 00) on 15 May
Kronos quartet
The virtuoso San Francisco string quartet return with a programme that includes new work by the pioneering composer Steve Reich. In London, they will join the BBC Symphony Orchestra and other ensembles during a 2-day festival dedicated to Reich, in which they will give the European premier of his WTC 9/11. Elsewhere their programme will also include works by Laurie Anderson and Damon Albarn. Tour starts at London LSO St Lukes (0207 638 8891) on 7 May, and ends at Norwich Theatre Royal (01603 63 00 00) on 17 May
Talvin Singh and Niladri Kumar
An intriguing combination of two great musicians who combine Indian classical training with experimental contemporary and experimental music. Talvin Singh is a tabla player, producer and composer who has worked with Bjrk and Sun Ra, while Kumar is one of the finest sitar players of his generation. They come together to promote their new album Together. Bristol Colston Hall (0117 922 3686) on 19 April. Then touring.
Staff Benda Bilili ? Star pick
The extraordinary story of the Congolese band's battle with disability and poverty, and their journey from the streets of Kinshasa to the concert halls of the world, is the subject of the remarkable film Benda Bilili!, but there's nothing depressing about their rousing blend of rumba, reggae and soul. The Sage, Gateshead (0191 443 4661) on 12 May, then touring.
