New music: Hercules and Love Affair ? Shelter

New York's nu-disco crew turn the xx's hushed tones into a house anthem

The xx must be one of the most remixed and covered bands in recent years. Artists including Jonquil, OMD, Shakira and Gorillaz have all successfully (well, not Shakira, let's be honest) reworked their minimal originals into completely new shapes, be it Jonquil's skittering version of Infinity or Damon Albarn crooning sweetly over Crystalised. Now comes the turn of New York's Hercules and Love Affair, who have transformed the slow-burning Shelter into a (still achingly sad) house anthem, complete with computerised squelches and Kim Ann Foxman's sultry purr.

Shelter is the B-side of new single Painted Eyes, due on 18 April through Moshi Moshi.
