Our pick of the week: The story, the stat, the quote, the tweet

Oliver Laughland on the people and stories in the media spotlight in the last seven days

The story

End of the world

Acting with the precision of a surgeon and the impunity of a dictator, Rupert Murdoch called time on one of the biggest-selling papers in the western world. Although it's hard to see who would want to read the paper with its reputation now so tarnished, the job losses of hundreds of staff has sparked outrage among journalists either side of the Murdoch trench line.

Subeditors of sister paper the Sun walked out of the office in solidarity, prompting fears of a shortage of eye-grabbing headlines and carefully constructed puns. Meanwhile, the doors remain locked on News International's ivory tower as certain members of Rupert's inner circle cling desperately to their jobs. How long can they hold on?

The stat

25,000...

? worth of IVF treatment to the winner of the world' s first "baby lottery". It costs just 25 to enter, and has sparked condemnation from fertility experts who fear it trivialises childbirth. But why not just pay 1 to enter the normal lottery and win millions instead?

The quote

Brian Sewell

"There's too much, not only of gay men ? but also of lesbians, bisexuals, the transgender community, cross-dressers and everyone else with some sexual quirk or fetish." Proof that his views are as old as he is, art critic Brian Swell seems to suggest a gay "mafia" have infiltrated the drab streets of Coronation Street, which, he claims, once brought to life the paintings of Lowry, but now reflects a "shoddy, tinsel-edged glamour" as epitomised by its four gay residents. Let's just hope he hasn't seen any Will & Grace repeats recently.

The tweet

@liamgallagher

It was the big sibling rivalry of 90s Britpop, and a decade on, the Gallaghers have taken their squabbling online. As Noel announced his debut solo album and told a press conference his brother "nearly took his face off" the night Oasis split, Liam tweeted simply: "SHITBAG".
