Motorola acquires maker of ZumoCast and ZumoDrive, MotoBlur will get new features

Motorola logoMotorola has acquired Zecter, Inc. -- a company whose name you probably haven't heard before, but which is behind two very cool services: ZumoDrive and ZumoCast.

While we haven't covered ZumoDrive before, it's basically a cloud backup and sync solution that gives you 2 GB of space for free, and has very nifty mobile clients to make sure your files are with you wherever you go.

Lee looked at ZumoCast a few months ago. It's a service that will easily stream media from your computer(s) to your iPod, iPhone or iPad, or any browser.

So what would Motorola possibly want with these services? To enhance their very own Android UI overlay called MotoBlur, apparently. So expect some cloudiness to appear in the next generation of MotoBlur (that may or may not launch on Android Honeycomb). Motorola has said that Zecter's wireless syncing, desktop integration, and on-the-fly video transcoding will all make it into the new MotoBlur.

Zecter says that ZumoDrive will remain operational, and it will receive improvements and continued support. The ZumoCast downloads have been taken down for now, but people who have already downloaded the apps can continue to use the service. Also, the downloads will be brought back at some point in the future. You can sign up on the ZumoCast homepage to be notified when that happens.
