New music: David Lynch ? Good Day Today

The cult director branches further into the world of music with this satisfying slice of electro-pop. Christmas No 1, anybody?

This isn't cult director David Lynch's first foray into music ? he's worked on soundtracks to his own films as well as collaborating with producer Danger Mouse and the late Mark Linkous on Dark Night of the Soul. Good Day Today ? streamed here for the first time and released on iTunes today ? shows Lynch dipping his toe into the pop mainstream. After an explosive opening, the song settles into a minimal electro groove that recalls Crystal Castles, before Lynch's heavily treated vocals continue the sense of emotional detachment. The track finds Lynch in a pleading mood, just wanting to have a pretty good day, which seems fair enough. There's a brilliant bit where his downbeat robot voice sighs "send me an angel, save me" and then intones "so tired" before sudden bursts of gunfire and explosions. While probably not catchy enough to be Christmas No 1 (although, if we can start a Facebook group, who knows?), Good Day Today is a surprisingly immediate and satisfying slice of electro-pop.

SiteLauncher for Chrome lets you jump to sites using a single keystroke

sitelauncher

Back in 2008, Lee covered SiteLauncher for Firefox. It's a simple add-on that provides you with a customizable "shortcut panel" for your favorite websites. SiteLauncher for Chrome provides basically the same service, but for Google's browser. I've been using it for a few days now, and while it's not perfect, it's still very handy.

Pros: When it works, it really does provide single-keystroke access to the sites I need. Ctrl+Space and then d can take me to Download Squad. I like it. It's very customizable. You can create and delete groups, move sites from group to group, etc. The hotkey assignment GUI is well thought-out. You can see at a glance what hotkeys are already used.

Cons: It doesn't always work. Sometimes I hit Ctrl+Space and nothing happens. That's mainly when the address bar ("Omnibar") is in focus, and I suspect it's due to Chrome's limitations. Still, it's annoying. It's one of those add-ons that takes some getting used to, but once you're addicted, you want to use it all the time. Having it work intermittently just keeps the habit from forming.

Okay, that was just one con -- but it's a big one!

Bottom line: Awesome add-on, if only it worked all the time.

Celebrities take a vow of Twitter silence

Lady Gaga, Usher and friends are exercising cyber-restraint to raise money for World Aids Day

For more than two decades, organisations linked to World Aids Day have used the heft of their celebrity supporters to push their message. This year, though, the celebrities are doing something genuinely unthinkable ? they're exercising restraint.

It's part of a campaign called Digital Life Sacrifice, whereby celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys and at least one Kardashian will attempt to raise money for Keep A Child Alive by refusing to update their Facebook and Twitter accounts until $1m has been raised. It's a genius idea ? it's new, it harnesses social networking, it raises money for a good cause and the celebrities can go away bloated with an even greater sense of self-importance than usual.

That's not to say that it couldn't all backfire, though. Essentially, Digital Life Sacrifice is asking the public to decide whether they'd prefer to live in world where children don't die of HIV and Aids, or a world where Kim Kardashian ? essentially a less useful version of Paris Hilton ? doesn't use Twitter to bombard followers with links to KardashianKard.com, her dreadful-sounding prepaid credit card website. It's a tough choice.

Obviously there are a few workarounds so you don't end up feeling like a total monster. You could donate money to a different scheme with a similar goal, which would mean simultaneously helping the less fortunate and effectively banishing Lady Gaga to a lifetime of being unable to upload any more photographs of furry unicorns to Twitpic. Or maybe, if you're a benevolent millionaire, you could donate $2m to Keep A Child Alive on the sole condition that Usher promises never to darken anybody's Twitter feed with tweets reading "Whatup Miami?" ? or any more witless salutations to seemingly arbitrarily chosen towns ? again.

Of course, there's no doubt that this campaign will be a success, and that it'll soon be repeated with even more celebrities taking part. The trickiest bit will be picking the right celebrities. After all, on Remembrance Day Alan Sugar seemed to have trouble pausing for even two minutes without abrasively harrumphing on about his book (he blamed a technical glitch). And there's a genuine worry that Kanye West might suffer some horrific aneurism if he was banned from screeching whatever ambient thoughts happen to be passing through his mind at any given point in time. But that's a worry for another day. We've already silenced a Kardashian. That's enough for now.

Paris Hilton's fashion crime

Paris Hilton is spotted hard at work doing manual labour for her community service order - in 4in stilettos

Paris, love, you so didn't read the dress code for this event did you? But then, community service summonses presumably don't come on a gilt-edged stiffy. Somebody should have informed Ms Hilton that battered Reeboks are more the thing for industrial decorating. Her 4in stilettos were a poor choice. And worn with the "Hollywood Beautification Team" yellow T, they make the socialite-cum-probationer look like she's promoting breakdown insurance outside Morrisons.

Go Launcher is a slick, customizable home screen for Android

Now that my Android device is cluttered with apps and games, I figured it was time to tidy up my home screen -- and Go Launcher is up to the task. It's a highly customizable home replacement which supports app folders (like iOS), and widgets, multiple pages, and a huge number of user-configurable settings.

Tap the grid icon and Go displays all your apps in a paged 4x4 grid -- which you can switch to 5x4 or 5x5. There's also a landscape mode, though it's disabled by default. Simply pop in a checkmark in the operation settings screen to enable rotation. Screen switching is lightning fast, and Android's built-in search is there to respond to your queries. Go Launcher even offers basic gesture support and can do everything from opening settings screens to launching your favorite app with the flick of a finger.

DepthJS for Chrome lets you use a Microsoft Kinect to browse the web

DepthJS demo
A team from the MIT Media Lab has built a Chrome extension that uses Microsoft's Kinect to navigate on Web pages and around Chrome's chrome. The extension is called DepthJS and is available on GitHub, has an AGPL license and therefore is obviously open for outside code contributions. A demo video showcasing DepthJS is after the break, and you truly can't appreciate this without watching the video.

So mere days after we saw a proof-of-concept of Kinect controlling Windows 7, here it is expanding to Web browsers. This is clearly one controller that is not going to stay forever tethered to an Xbox 360, as Microsoft may have originally intended it to. We expect to see even more exciting ways to use a Kinect to control all kinds of things in the future.

Image vs. Reality

Compare and contrast. Here is the FT's Gillian Tett explaining some the changes she had to make in her book Fool's Gold in order to appeal to both British and American audiences:

The real fun erupted when I wrote the preface. Initially I planned to start the book by admitting that I was not a true expert on high finance: instead I crashed into this world in 2005, after a background spent in journalism-cum-social anthropology — making me a well-intentioned amateur, but without complete knowledge.

My friends in the British publishing world loved that honesty; in the UK, self-deprecation sells, particularly for “well-meaning amateurs” such as the writer Bill Bryson. But my American friends hated it. In New York, I was sternly told, absolutely nobody wants to listen to self-doubt. If you are going to write a book — let alone stand on a political platform or run a company — you must act as if you are an expert, filled with complete conviction. For the US version, the preface was removed entirely.

And here is Washington Post ombudsman Andrew Alexander admitting that reporters at the Post can't do basic arithmetic and pretty much don't seem to care about it:

A review of published corrections for the past three months shows that few days passed without a numbers error...."I think what's going on is that when journalists see a number, they take it at face value and don't question it," [Scott] Maier said. "With numbers, I think journalists tend to abdicate that scrutiny."

....Many newsrooms provide remedial math training, but that's not been done at The Post. It should be considered. And given the increasing usage of numbers in reporting and graphics, The Post should pay heightened attention to math and statistical literacy when evaluating prospective hires.

In America, no one wants to listen to self doubt. Also in America, our reporters don't have a working knowledge of arithmetic, which underlies practically every topic commonly reported on the front page or the evening news. Somehow, I suspect the latter makes the former a lot easier.

Statement by the President on the 35th Anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

Release Time:
For Immediate Release

In America, we believe that every child, regardless of class, color, creed, or ability, deserves access to a world-class education.  But as recently as thirty-five years ago, an American child with a disability might have attended school without the interventions and accommodations necessary for their success; or been involuntarily isolated in a state-run institution; or even received no education at all.

That was wrong – and America set out to right it.  Today, across the United States, nearly 6.6 million students with disabilities rely on the provisions of the landmark Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to ensure that they enjoy the same educational rights as all children.

And as we mark the thirty-fifth anniversary of that law, we remember what it was all about.  Equal opportunity.  Equal access.  Not dependence, but independence.  We know that our education system must hold children with disabilities to the same high standards as those without disabilities, and hold them accountable for their success and their growth.  We remember that disability rights are civil rights, too – and pledge to enforce those rights in order to live up to our founding principles and ensure the promise of opportunity for all our people.  And even as we celebrate children with disabilities and their parents, teachers, advocates, and all who still strive to tear down the true barriers to success – even as we celebrate how far we’ve come – we commit ourselves to the ever-unfinished work of forming that more perfect union.

Weekly Address: President Obama Delivers Thanksgiving Greeting

Release Time:
For Immediate Release

WASHINGTON – During this holiday season, President Obama used his weekly address to give thanks for the blessings of America, in particular that distinctly American impulse to give something of ourselves and do what is required to make tomorrow better than today.  With that sense of determination and sacrifice, America has built a powerful economy, stood against tyranny, fought for equality, and connected the globe with our own science and imagination.  And by working together as one people – as Americans -- we can overcome the challenges currently facing our nation.

Today, like millions of other families across America, Michelle, Malia, Sasha and I will sit down to share a Thanksgiving filled with family and friends – and a few helpings of food and football, too.  And just as folks have done in every Thanksgiving since the first, we’ll spend some time taking stock of what we’re thankful for: the God-given bounty of America, and the blessings of one another.

This is also a holiday that captures that distinctly American impulse to give something of ourselves.  Even as we speak, there are countless Americans serving at soup kitchens and food pantries; contributing to their communities; and standing guard around the world.

And in a larger sense, that’s emblematic of what Americans have always done.  We come together and do what’s required to make tomorrow better than today.  That’s who we are.

Consider our journey since that first Thanksgiving.  We are among the world’s youngest of peoples, but time and again, we have boldly and resiliently led the way forward.  Against tough odds, we are a people who endure – who explored and settled a vast and untamed continent; who built a powerful economy and stood against tyranny in all its forms; who marched and fought for equality, and connected a globe with our own science and imagination.

None of that progress was predestined.  None of it came easily.  Instead, the blessings for which we give thanks today are the product of choices made by our parents, and grandparents, and generations before – whose determination and sacrifice ensured a better future for us.

This holiday season, we must resolve once more to do the same.

This is not the hardest Thanksgiving America has ever faced.  But as long as many members of our American family are hurting, we’ve got to look out for one another.  As long as many of our sons and daughters and husbands and wives are at war, we’ve got to support their mission and honor their service.  And as long as many of our friends and neighbors are looking for work, we’ve got to do everything we can to accelerate this recovery and keep our economy moving forward.

And we will.  But we won’t do it as any one political party.  We’ve got to do it as one people.  And in the coming weeks and months, I hope that we can work together, Democrats and Republicans and Independents alike, to make progress on these and other issues.

That’s why, next week, I’ve invited the leadership of both parties to the White House for a real and honest discussion – because I believe that if we stop talking at one another, and start talking with one another, we can get a lot done.

For what we are called to do again today isn’t about Democrats or Republicans.  It’s not about left or right.  It’s about us.  It’s about what we know this country is capable of.  It’s about what we want America to be in this new century.

A vibrant nation that makes sure its children are the best-educated in the world.  A healthy, growing economy that runs on clean energy and creates the jobs of tomorrow.  A responsible government that reduces its deficits.  An America where every citizen is able to go as far as he or she desires.

We can do all this, because we’ve done it before.  We’re made of the same sturdy stuff as the travelers who sat down to the first Thanksgiving, and all who came after – who worked, and sacrificed, and invested, because they believed that their efforts would make the difference for us.

That’s who we are.  We shape our own destiny with conviction, compassion, and clear and common purpose.  We honor our past and press forward with the knowledge that tomorrow will be better than today.  We are Americans.  That’s the vision we won’t lose sight of.  That’s the legacy that falls to our generation.  That’s the challenge that together, we are going to meet.

To every American, I am thankful for the privilege of being your President.  To all our service members stationed around the world, I am honored to be your Commander-in-Chief.  And from the Obama family to yours, have a very Happy Thanksgiving.  Thank you.
