Jenny and Johnny: I'm Having Fun Now ? review

(Warners)

Having caused a cultish stir with LA indie band Rilo Kiley, singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis released a tremendous debut solo album with the Watson Twins, Rabbit Fur Coat, in 2006. If her follow-up, Acid Tongue, merely trod water, this new album, recorded with her partner, Johnathan Rice, reaffirms her appeal in no uncertain fashion. Lewis and Rice's melodious exchanges are always easy on the ear. But lurking among the power-pop harmonies is uncertainty and discord: the pet snakes in the grass of any relationship; the household implements that can wound. "You'd make bedroom eyes at a test tube," snipes Lewis. An unsentimental delight.
