Stoner rockers plan first studio album since 1995 ? and their former guitarist and songwriter is not invited
Stoner-rock legends Kyuss plan to extend their reunion with a new studio album in 2011 ? their first since 1995's And the Circus Leaves Town. But frontman John Garcia said founding member Josh Homme will not be invited to the recording. "I don't want to set myself up," he explained, "for a big fat no."
The band will begin their comeback in March, playing dates across Europe and the UK under the name Kyuss Lives. As previously reported, the lineup will include Garcia, bassist Nick Oliveri and drummer Brant Bjork. Bruno Fevery has replaced Homme on guitar. "Our rehearsals are going so well that we're thinking of doing another record," Garcia told Rock Sound (via Exclaim). "Brant, Nick and myself have collectively agreed that once everything is done live and we're done with our solo projects, we're going to do [it]."
While Garcia repeatedly revisited Kyuss material in the decade after the band broke up, the rest of his former bandmates always seemed nervous about tarnishing the group's legacy. Homme was the most vocal opponent of a reunion, calling the idea "blasphemy". "I like that nobody saw Kyuss, and that it was largely misunderstood," he said in 2007. "If you weren't there, well, you weren't."
"I have nothing bad to say about Josh," Garcia said this week. "He's extremely intelligent, very smart, a great guitar player, songwriter, vocalist. He is a bad ass, there is no question, and I love him dearly. But he is busy with his own thing." Besides Them Crooked Vultures and Queens of the Stone Age, Homme is in demand as a producer, recording the likes of Arctic Monkeys. "[And] he's a father, a businessman ... Even if we asked him to [record with Kyuss], I don't think he'd say yes, so I don't want to set myself up for a big fat no, which is 99.9 percent what he would say."
Homme has yet to comment on Kyuss Lives.
