TweetDeck for Chrome, which is also referred to by its creators as ChromeDeck, has just received its first update since going live in Google's new Chrome Web Store, and is now at version 0.9.5.2. The HTML5-based Twitter, Facebook and Google Buzz client has gained support for desktop notifications. What's more, these can be individually set per column. So, for example, if you'd only like to be notified when you receive new Twitter Direct Messages, you can do that. Or you can be notified only when you get new Facebook messages. Or both. If you can put it inside a ChromeDeck column, you can be notified when there's new content.
The notifications manifest themselves as pop-ups in the lower-right part of your screen (because of Chrome's limitations, they can't yet be set to show up elsewhere), or a sound can be played to make you realize that something new has arrived. Or both. It really is up to you. Do note, however, that notification sounds currently don't work in Chrome 10 builds. This is due to a known bug in Chrome and will probably be fixed soon.
To access the notification settings, click on any column's Wrench-looking Settings button, and go from there.
TweetDeck for Chrome is slowly but surely becoming a very robust social networking client. Its only downside at the moment, in my experience at least, is that it doesn't retain your timeline position(s) when updating. Which means that columns that have received updates start scrolling, whether you were trying to read something in them or not. And, with TweetDeck for Chrome supporting Twitter's streaming updates, you know it will refresh itself a lot. One more thing: if you're wondering how you can view which tweet a certain tweet is in reply to, just click the Reply button and you'll see the full conversation show up. This may seem counterintuitive at first (at least compared to how other clients do it), but it does make sense, as you can immediately start writing your reply while still seeing the full contents of the conversation thread.
TweetDeck for Chrome 0.9.5.2 is free and can be installed from the Chrome Web Store. If you already have it installed, it should automatically update itself the next time you start Chrome. If, for whatever reason, you'd like to force a manual update, there's a guide for how to do that available here.
