This week's new singles

Those Dancing Days
Can't Find Entrance (Wichita)

There is magic in the voice of Those Dancing Days singer Linnea Jnsson, who sounds as if she's been ripped from the great first Sugababes album, One Touch, and transported to present-day indie. Can't Find Entrance is produced by Since U Been Gone and I Want It That Way writing genius Max Martin, and it's a sad, sweet, galloping sing-song about not being able to find a way in. Metaphorically, one assumes, otherwise that would be an issue for Those Dancing Days' health and safety rep, rather than the world of pop.

Brother
Darling Buds Of May (Geffen)

Like a rippling burp followed by a pause for approval, Brother are macho and prone to spouting off about how they're the best band of all time in the world ever. Anyone familiar with key 1990s collection Shine 3 ("20 New Dazzling Indie Hits") will recognise that such bluster really can get you somewhere, ie sandwiched in between the Lightning Seeds and Sleeper on a bargain compilation CD. Darling Buds Of May suggests that the best band of all time in the world ever seems to involve championing nonsense lyrics about birthdays and sirens and the idea that competing guitar solos are pleasant. They are not pleasant for anyone, and it's probably best if we all back away slowly and pretend this never happened.

Dum Dum Girls
He Gets Me High (Sub Pop)

Indie has been swamped by reverb and flicky eyeliner and sha-la-la backing vocals lately, so it's nice to see Dum Dum Girls adding a bit of the Bangles to the current revival of the 80s revival of the 60s. He Gets Me High is the kind of contagious shimmer-pop you once might have waited up to see on late-night MTV, back when it actually had videos on it, rather than drunk orange people punching each other.

Bob Sinclair Feat Sean Paul
Tik Tok (Energy Production)

As each part of it emerges, Tik Tok slowly turns into one giant warning klaxon informing you of its own rubbishness: a 2 Unlimited sample, a song title still clammy from Ke$ha's Jack Daniels-stained paws and the dreaded words "Feat Sean Paul". If you have ever wondered what going on an 18-30 holiday in 1995 and getting off with a waiter at the foam party sounds like, this is it.

Katy Perry
ET (Virgin)

If Rihanna's S&M somehow failed to put you off intimacy for life ("Sex in the air, I don't care, I love the smell of it"? Someone get her a wet wipe), Katy Perry is on hand to give it another go. "Infect me with your love and fill me with your poison", she pleads over an I Love Rock & Roll beat, instantly giving The Joy Of Teen Sex's panel of experts a funny turn. Kanye West drops in on the single mix and, failing to pick up on the STD vibe, goes off on a slovenly rap about "a bar out in Mars where they drivin' spaceships instead of cars". What Katy fails to find out is why anyone, even aliens, should be driving indoors in the first place. A wasted opportunity.
