Chris Brown condemns TV show for asking about assault on Rihanna

Chris Brown says Good Morning America agreed not to press him about his assault on Rihanna. Good Morning America says it made no such agreement

Chris Brown has attacked the TV show Good Morning America for exploiting him in the interview that led to him "going ballistic". In his first statement about the affair, the R&B singer blamed anchor the show's anchor, Robin Roberts, for diverging from agreed-upon "talking points", asking him instead about his 2009 assault on his then-girlfriend Rihanna.

Brown addressed the incident on the BET TV network's show 106 & Park, apologising "to anybody who was startled in the office, anybody who was offended or really looked disappointed in my actions". He even extended an olive-branch to his interviewer: "Please know that everybody is beautiful," he said. "You're beautiful, Robin Roberts." But Brown conceded that he "just let off, like, steam" in his dressing-room, he also insisted Roberts had provoked him, asking surprise questions about his assault on Rihanna, which resulted in him being sentenced to 180 days' community labour and five years' probation.

"When I do interviews, we always send out a talking points sheet," Brown said. "And if the network isn't compliant with what we want to do ... [if we can't] equally accomplish a goal ... [then] we back out and wait until it's a better situation. The talking points were positivity and everything that was sent to me was about the album. As the interview proceeded, I was thrown off by it. I felt like they told us this just so they [could] get us on the show to exploit me. And so I took it very, very hard."

After Roberts pressed Brown on-camera, he reportedly smashed a chair into the window of his dressing-room, and stormed bare-chested from the studio building. Although Brown admitted he "got very emotional", he said: "I didn't physically hurt anyone. I didn't try to hurt anyone. I just released the anger that I had inside me."

In a statement issued by parent network ABC, Good Morning America denied it had deviated from a pre-arranged interview plan. "Chris Brown was invited on Good Morning America to perform and to be interviewed," they wrote. "There were no talking points offered."
