Disco Queen Loleatta Holloway Dies at 64

In the disco music galaxy filled with superstars like Donna Summer, Diana Ross and Evelyn 'Champagne' King, it wasn't easy for female singers who weren't part of that musical royalty to make their mark.

But Loleatta Holloway did.

Her booming vocals featured on the infectious 1980's hit 'Love Sensation' kept the dance floors packed and showed off a voice trained in a gospel church from an early age.

Unfortunately, Holloway, 64, died this week after falling into a coma.

Holloway first came to public notice in the early '70s with the ballad 'Cry to Me,' which got to No. 10 on the Billboard R&B chart. It was a few years later, when Holloway signed with a division of legendary New York recording shop Salsoul Records, though, that Holloway found her voice as a disco diva.

In all, Holloway had 18 songs hit Hot Dance Music charts and four reached No. 1.

Thankfully, when artists pass on, they never really leave us because their music survives. Holloway has had her songs sampled in the post-disco era by Marky Mark, the Pet Shop Boys and Moby.

Holloway may never have hit the heights of other disco singers of her day, like Summer and King, but her contributions helped make the '70s and '80s a lot more fun and danceable than any other time in recent memory.

Rest in peace, Loleatta.
