Pop singer's album 21 leapfrogs Foo Fighters after their week-long reign in pole position
The record-breaking pop singer Adele has reclaimed the top position in the album charts, dislodging the Foo Fighters after the band spent one week in the top spot.
Adele's album, 21, spent 11 weeks at the top of the charts, the longest reign by a female artist, before being ousted by the Foo Fighters' Wasting Light on Sunday 17 April.
But on Sunday Wasting Light dropped to number two, sandwiched between 21 and Adele's first album, 19, capping a remarkable 2011 so far for the 22-year-old singer.
21 debuted at number one in the UK album chart in January, and its 11 week reign meant Adele broke Madonna's record for the longest run at the top of the UK charts. The Foo Fighters narrowly crept past the north London-born singer last week with their seventh album ? depriving Adele of matching the all time record for longest spell at the top of the album charts ? but were outsold over the last week.
Adele's stay at the top of the charts meant she just missed out on equalling the record held by Bob Marley and the Wailers for the compilation Legend, which spent 12 weeks at number one in 1984.
Just seven weeks after its release 21 was certified by the British recorded music industry as having gone seven times platinum, with sales in excess of 2.1m copies, while in February she became the first artist since the Beatles to have two top five singles and two top five albums in the charts at the same time ? matching a feat set in 1964.
