Girls Aloud to reunite for 10th anniversary

Girl group's manager reveals plans for possible tour, or one-off gig, with Cheryl Cole joining her former bandmates

Girls Aloud's hiatus will end in 2012, with plans to stage "something" to mark their 10th anniversary, their manager has revealed. Cheryl Cole will reunite with her former bandmates for a one-off gig or even a possible tour.

"Cheryl is keen to get back with the girls," manager Hilary Shaw recently told the People. Girls Aloud have not performed together since opening for Coldplay at Wembley Stadium in 2009, and what was initially a one-year hiatus has since expanded to two going on three. "Everybody wants them to make a comeback and it will be next year," Shaw said. "It is their 10th anniversary so there will be something."

The obstacle to Girls Aloud's reunion is undisputed: Cheryl Cole's successful solo career. As with Beyonc and Destiny's Child, or Justin Timberlake and N*Sync, there is little incentive to sharing a spotlight when you can fill an arena on your own. Although all of the girls have been pursuing their own careers, Cole is the only one to have eclipsed her former project. Nadine Coyle's solo LP flopped last year, while Sarah Harding and Kimberley Walsh have crossed over to acting and TV presenting. Nicola Roberts, who launched a makeup line, is reportedly readying her solo debut.

Late last year, Coyle confirmed that Cole's availability would dictate the terms of a Girls Aloud reunion. "We've got to be realistic about what has happened to Cheryl over the last couple of years," she told i-D magazine. With reports that Cole's schedule could get even busier ? she is rumoured to be joining X Factor's new US series ? there was talk of Girls Aloud touring as a four-piece. This was bolstered by tabloid claims that the singers had been "squabbling".

But Shaw insisted that all is well for the members of the decade's bestselling girl group. "The girls are still getting on great," she said. "They speak all the time, and that includes Cheryl and Nadine with the other girls."

Girls Aloud were formed in 2002, as part of the reality series Popstars: The Rivals. They have released 21 consecutive Top 15 singles and their most recent album, 2008's Out of Control, has sold more than 2m copies in the UK.
